Press Release: University of Auckland

Media release
2 May 2011

International Visitor to Lecture on Challenges, Opportunities of Green Economy

A senior member of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-HABITAT, will deliver a public lecture at The University of Auckland on the challenges and opportunities of a green economy.

The University of Auckland became a Habitat Partner University (HPU) in June 2009. The initiative aims to strengthen ties between the UN and tertiary institutions around the world and build the teaching and research capacity of tertiary institutions in the field of sustainable urban development. As one of approximately 20 universities involved, The University of Auckland is fully engaged in developing the shape of the HPU programme.
Dr Gulelat Kebede heads UN-HABITAT’s Training and Capacity Building Branch. During his month-long visit to New Zealand, Dr Kebede will participate in the opening of a multi-cultural art installation; lead seminars on urban sustainability, planning and development across the University; and meet representatives from the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education and Ministry for the Environment.

Dr Kebede’s public lecture, “Green Economy: Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Urban Development”, will highlight the notion of “decoupling” economic growth from the rate of use of energy and materials in the context of cities. It will argue that increasing energy prices and competition for dwindling natural resources pose serious challenges to the western economic growth model, based on relatively cheap oil and natural resources. Dr Kebede says the climate change debate has awakened citizens and governments to these new challenges, but also heightened awareness of the opportunities to move to low carbon economic growth models. He says the concept of green economy thus gives sustainable development a new impetus and urgency, thanks to the realities of the urbanising 21st century. He raises the key questions and challenges faced by cities in developing countries who want to transit to green economy, while eradicating poverty. Dr Kebede will highlight urban
growth pattern strategies which UN-HABITAT advocates to promote the principles and ideals of green economy.

“Gulelat Kebede’s visit to The University of Auckland is highly significant in that he will be engaging with staff and students across the University to develop tangible ideas for collaborative research projects to tackle the big urban issues. I believe it’s a first of its kind for the University,” says Dory Reeves, Professor of Planning and University focal point for the UN-HABITAT visit.

UN-HABITAT is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Gulelat Kebede will deliver “Green Economy: Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Urban Development” at 6pm, Monday 9 May, in the Fisher and Paykel auditorium at The University‘s Owen G Glenn Business School (12 Grafton Road).

The main sources of fuel in the UK are gas and electric and in some cases coal is still used. Heating oil is also popular across the UK but when you compare the number of people using heating oil to the number of people using the other types of fuel, you will see that the percentage is quite small.

The areas in which heating oil is popular tend to be sparsely populated which makes laying gas piping unviable due to the costs involved.

<ins><ins></ins></ins>

With heating oil expanding to more and more areas each day, it looks as though the number of people using this fuel will rise above the current figure of one and a half million. Oil fuelled systems are taking over the number of bottled gas and coal systems both of which also need to be delivered.

The great thing for the consumer however, is that the amount of competition in the market means that it is always possible to find good deals. There are so many suppliers that you can choose from; from national to international suppliers as well as local companies.

The operation of heating oil suppliers has recently come under scrutiny due to a referral to the Office of Fair Trading. This was good news for the consumer because it meant that they received a much better service and there was a change in the way communities were supplied with their heating oil.

<ins><ins></ins></ins>

The oil companies now have to ensure that customers are always getting the best prices and that they are not being overcharged; this is done by providing better training for staff and by ensuring metering equipment is improved. The way that staff has been trained is something that the oil companies have received a lot of praise for. People involved in the heating oil supply business now have a much better understanding of their industry than many in an equivalent position working for alternative or different kinds of energy suppliers.

When it comes to all your heating oil needs, heating oil can be delivered to you by the boys at bolierjuice.com.

<ins><ins></ins></ins> <ins><ins></ins></ins>If your heating oil is leaking you will need to take action. A leak in your heating oil system could be a real hazard to your health, not to mention the fact that you will be losing money. You will find that if your heating oil leak is anywhere in the vicinity of running water then it will be more serious and action should be taken without delay. The following are just some of the things that you need to do if you spot leaking heating oil.

You always have to make safety your number one priority when it comes to an oil leak. Be sure to turn off all electrical equipment near the leak because heating oil is flammable. You should also make sure that there are no naked flames near the area. Move your family and pets away from the area.

If you have furniture near the area then make sure to move it away. Your furniture could be ruined by oil if it is made from cloth materials and you may have to put it in a skip.

Get in touch with your heating oil supplier to ask for help and advice.

It is a good idea to take photographs of the damage. If you are going to be making an insurance claim then these photos could prove to be important.

If you have a home contents insurance policy then you might want to consider getting in touch with the insurance company at this point. Before they settle any claim, they may want to see the damage for themselves.

If the leak is quite big then the first thing you should do is to contact your oil provider. The company will need to take action straight away because it is an emergency situation. There may be very little you can do with a large leak and for safety reasons your best action will be to keep out of the way and let the professionals handle things.

When it comes to all your heating oil needs, boilerjuice.com has you covered.

from International Business Times
With heating oil prices from the early April high to the overnight low sitting as much as 57 cents lower or for a decline in excess of 17%, it is clear that the setback corrected a significant portion of the overbought fundamental condition. With the non commercial and non reportable combined net long position in heating oil last week pegged at 43,140 contracts and considering that prices have dropped 37 cents since the COT was calculated, it is possible that the overbought technical position in heating oil has been largely balanced. In fact, with US heating oil stocks sitting dramatically below the 5 year average and distillate stocks recently falling back into the average stocks range, the odds of a bottoming are increasing. In fact, if the US refinery rate slides ahead, because of the scare provided by this week’s commodity washout, that could accelerate the tightening of physical stocks of heating oil and distillates in the US. It would appear that the $2.80 level is being seen as a consolidation/value zone in the June heating oil contract.

Average prices for propane are illustrated in Table 8, grouped by region. Information on prices for regular gasoline as provided by representatives from Clean Cities is also shown. These prices were collected from across the country from Clean Cities Coordinators, fuel providers, and other stakeholders on a voluntary basis. About 160 propane prices were collected in this reporting period.
As Table 8 illustrates regionally, propane prices are somewhat higher than gasoline in some regions and lower in others. Overall, propane was about 5 cents per gallon more than gasoline. Based on calculations of standard deviation in prices, it can be seen that propane prices for vehicle use seems to have varied more than gasoline prices during this sampling period.7
The map to the right illustrates some cost differentials between propane and regular gasoline on a per-gallon basis, based on differentials between propane prices and gasoline prices for each state (versus the regional averages illustrated in Table 8). In this map, negative numbers represent costs for propane lower than costs for gasoline, and positive numbers represent propane prices higher than gasoline. States not highlighted with a color did not have any propane data points in the current report. Propane prices were most favorable in parts of the Lower Atlantic and the West.

CAMDEN, N.J., Dec. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — CITGO President and CEO Alejandro Granado and Citizens Energy Chairman Joseph P. Kennedy II today launched the seventh consecutive year of the CITGO-Venezuela Heating Oil Program.

The program will help more than 400,000 people this year in 25 states, including members of over 60 Native American tribes, families living in tenant-owned cooperatives, residents of over 250 homeless shelters, and thousands of single-family households.

“Over the years, the program has become the most important energy assistance program by an oil company. For CITGO, it aligns with the humanitarian and solidarity principles endorsed by the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela through its national oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA) that we echo in everything we do,” said CITGO President and CEO Alejandro Granado, who was joined by Camden Mayor Dana Redd at the launch event.

“CITGO is very proud to mark the seventh anniversary of our Heating Oil Program. Increasing energy costs continue to affect the quality of life for millions of people and impact community organizations that provide critical social services. As an energy company, we believe it is our obligation to use the strength of our resources to help alleviate the burden for those struggling to pay for home heating costs,” added Granado.

The 7th edition of the program was launched with a delivery of fuel to the Camden, N.J., row-house of a grandmother living on a limited income. Arlene Grier, who raised three children in her home on Merrimac Road, thanked Granado and Kennedy after they made a delivery of free heating oil to her home. “I want to thank CITGO and Citizens so much,” said Grier. “This helps a lot. Prices are going up but not my income, so I’m always having to decide between paying for food, heat, electricity, gas, or my mortgage. I wish other oil companies were as generous.”

Since 2005, CITGO has invested more than $400 million in energy assistance to those in need (’05-’11). Last year alone, more than $60 million in heating oil was donated to low-income families and individuals. With higher costs for heating oil and reduced government funding for energy assistance programs, the need this year is greater than ever.

“We don’t want families to have to choose between heating their homes or buying basic necessities such as food or medicine. No one should be forced to make those types of decisions,” said Mr. Granado. “We are grateful that through our CITGO-Venezuela Heating Oil Program, we can make families’ lives a little warmer.”

CITGO partners with Citizens Energy Corporation, a nonprofit created in 1979 by former U.S. Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II, to implement the program. Citizens Energy, which has used successful ventures in the energy and health care industries to finance charitable programs in the U.S. and abroad, has provided energy assistance to families in need for over 30 years.

“Senior citizens and low-income families are facing a terrible hardship this winter,” said Kennedy. “Heating oil prices are close to record levels, while federal fuel assistance has been more than cut in half. Households that got over $1,000 in assistance two years ago will be getting less than half that this season – barely enough for half a tank of oil.”

Kennedy said he approached major U.S. oil companies and oil-producing nations asking them to assist the poor in bearing the burden of rising energy costs. “They all said no,” said Kennedy, “except for CITGO and the people of Venezuela.”

“As the nation continues to recover from the global economic recession, I am delighted to see that CITGO and Citizens Energy Corporation will once again provide many eligible working families and seniors with free heating oil this winter,” said Camden Mayor Dana L. Redd. “Thanks to the generosity of CITGO and Citizens Energy, eligible participants will not need to make a decision between paying for heating oil or food for their families. I highly encourage eligible families to apply as soon as possible to this wonderful program.”

Families struggling to pay for home heating oil can call Citizens Energy at 1-877-JOE-4-OIL (1-877-563-4645) to see if they are eligible for heating oil assistance. If approved, the household will receive an authorization letter and details on how to arrange for a one-time delivery of 100 free gallons of oil.

CITGO, based in Houston, is a refiner, transporter and marketer of transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals and other industrial products. The company is owned by PDV America, Inc., an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Petroleos de Venezuela, S.A., the national oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. For more information visit www.citgo.com

Beginning in 1979 with oil-trading ventures in Latin America and Africa, Citizens Energy has used revenues from commercial enterprises to channel millions of dollars into charitable programs in the U.S. and abroad. Whether heating the homes of the elderly and the poor, lowering the cost of prescription drugs for millions of Americans, or starting solar heating projects in Jamaica and Venezuela, Citizens creates social ventures as innovative as the businesses that finance them.
July heating oil traded higher during the overnight session, but it has since turned into negative territory. Wednesday's EIA distillate stocks report showed a 105,000 barrel draw, which might have been tugged lower from boost in Midwest agricultural demand. EIA distillate stocks stand at 15.801 million barrels below last year but are 6.737 million above the five year average. Distillate imports came in at 125,000 barrels per day compared to 155,000 barrels the previous week. Average total distillate demand for the past four weeks was down 3.57% compared to last year. EIA heating oil stocks rose 1.317 million barrels.
